Real Solutions to the High Cost of Living & Job Slump

I will evaluate every piece of legislation that comes before me in Salem through this lens: Will this require Oregonians to pay more? Will this kill local jobs and hurt small businesses?

Problem: Just recently, Oregon was ranked as the 5th least affordable state in the nation. Oregon is also the 7th most regulated state in the nation, and we rank near the bottom in business friendliness. Coos and Douglas Counties have some of the highest unemployment rates in the state. Claire understands that a healthy private sector is vital to spur job creation and reduce consumer costs.

Claire’s Plan to Add Local Jobs and Cut Costs:

  • Address Oregon’s Corporate Activities Tax

    • Oregon's Corporate Activity Tax (CAT) is imposed on companies for  the "privilege of doing business in Oregon." This tax is effectively functioning in our state as a “hidden sales tax" because businesses have no choice but to pass down this cost onto the consumer in order to survive.  

  • Abolish Oregon’s Clean Fuels Program

    • Workers and families are paying an extra 22-23 cents per gallon for the Oregon Clean Fuels Program and none of this extra cost goes to fixing our roads and bridges! Claire will fight end this useless mandate that is costing you your hard-earned money.

  • End Oregon’s Death Tax 

    • It’s not just the wealthy who pay Oregon’s Death (Estate) Tax anymore. This tax is driving rural families out of our communities and out of their livelihoods. Claire has worked alongside other Republican leaders in Salem to increase the threshold for this tax to make it less punitive and will continue to push until it is repealed entirely.

Restore Public Safety as a Top Priority

Problem: Oregon ranks first in the nation for sex offenders per capita and has consistently had among the lowest numbers of law enforcement officers per capita. Instead of addressing this, Portland and Eugene Democrats are choosing to spend double what we spend on our Oregon State Police for healthcare for non-citizens! Claire wants public safety to be made a priority.  

Claire’s Plan to Make Our Communities Safe Again:

  • Support the Trump administration's push to increase harvest levels on our federal forests (and whenever possible, our state forests) to ensure our rural counties get additional support for critical services, like our sheriff’s departments. 

  • Advocate for law enforcement and our critical child advocacy centers to be prioritized in our $140 billion state budget instead of giving them what is left. 

  • Reverse devastating policies like Oregon’s “Catch and Release” Law which is allowing violent criminals to be released onto our streets before a trial.

Make A Difference in Our Kids’ Education

Problem: Oregon ranks 47th in the nation for the quality of our K-12 education, and we rank 50th in the nation for 4th grade reading scores. And what do Portland and Eugene Democrats choose to prioritize? Mandating climate change curriculum in our K-12 classrooms.

Claire’s Plan to Refocus K-12 on Achievement and Empower Parents:

  • Ensure our schools are focusing on the fundamentals of education–reading, writing, and math–and repeal burdensome laws like mandated climate change curriculum.

  • Support common sense legislation that would require students be held back if they can’t demonstrate grade-level proficiency in core subjects by third grade. 

  • Reinstate high school graduation standards so that Oregon’s diploma means something. 

  • Defend parents’ rights to strong educational choices–whether that is public, homeschool, charter school, or private school. Education is not a one size fits all setting.

  • Champion career and life alternatives such as trade schools and apprenticeships as strong alternatives to the traditional four year college pathway.

Claire’s Proven Conservative Values

  • Pro-Life: Claire believes deeply in the sanctity and value of life. She is the only candidate in this race endorsed by Oregon Right To Life PAC.

  • Pro-Second Amendment: Claire doesn’t just talk about supporting the Second Amendment, she lives it. She is a licensed concealed handgun holder and an active, lifelong hunter and fisher.

  • Pro-Protecting Women’s Sports and Spaces: Claire is a former three-sport high school varsity athlete and played softball collegiately. She is a firm believer that we have a responsibility to protect women’s sports and women’s spaces from biological men.
